Being born & raised in Colorado, my desire to connect with nature and portray it in my art has been my passion. The beauty, wonder, and mystery of our natural environment truly inspires me.

I love the challenges and brilliant luminosity of watercolor and strive to use bright, sometimes unexpected, colors in my paintings. Sometimes I wish to convey an emotion through my use of color, sometimes I just want to make someone smile!

I have no formal art education other than taking classes and workshops along the way. I am finally gaining enough confidence to start showing my work by attending art shows and festivals.

I am hoping that my work will be a blessing to you and bring you a sense of joy and peacefulness.

Visit http://www.saltlightwatercolors.com/ to see my work.

Digital Art and Traditional Photography Defined

Purpose:

The purpose of this document is to create a set of guidelines for discriminating between the Categories of Traditional Photography and Digital Photo Art.

Background:

Photography has been around for more almost 200 years. The first permanent photograph was an image produced in 1825 by the French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. His photographs were produced on a polished pewter plate covered with a petroleum derivative called bitumen of Judea.

Ultimately, the modern photographic process came about from a series of refinements and improvements in the first half of the 19th century. In 1884 George Eastman, of Rochester, New York, developed dry gel on paper, or film, to replace the photographic plate so that a photographer no longer needed to carry boxes of plates and toxic chemicals around. In July 1888 Eastman’s Kodak camera went on the market with the slogan “You press the button, we do the rest”. Photography became available for the mass-market in 1901 with the introduction of the Kodak Brownie.

Digital photography is a form of photography that uses digital technology to make images of subjects. Until the advent of such technology, photography used photographic film to create images which could be made visible by photographic processing. By contrast, digital photographs can be displayed, printed, stored, manipulated, transmitted, and archived using digital and computer techniques, without chemical processing.

The first commercially available digital camera was the 1990 Dycam Model 1; it also sold as the Logitech Fotoman. It used a CCD image sensor, stored pictures digitally, and connected directly to a computer for download. In 1991, Kodak brought to market the Kodak DCS-100, the beginning of a long line of professional Kodak DCS SLR cameras that were based in part on film bodies, often Nikons. It used a 1.3 megapixel sensor and was priced at $13,000.

Background Summary - today a vast majority of the images created by photographers are created digitally.

It is not how an image is created that distinguishes “traditional photography” from “digital photo art” but what is done with the image after it is created.

How these two differ is the subject of the remainder of this paper.

Categories:

For the purposes of this document we will define Traditional Photography as a process for which the end result is an image that is created by photographing a subject whether with film or digital camera and then converting the resulting image into either a print or digital file without substantially modifying the original subject as at was envisioned by the photographer at the moment of capture. We cannot create an exhaustive list of alterations that are allowed under this definition, but by providing a partial list and using common sense we believe that most images can be categorized without painful effort.

The following alterations are deemed allowable under this definition:

          Cosmetic Enhancements including modification of

o Contrast

o Saturation

o Sharpness

o Cropping

o Horizontal Flipping (equivalent to reversing a slide)

o Removal of insignificant elements from the image to make it “cleaner”

o Converting the image to B&W, monochrome, or toned (e.g. sepia)

We then further define Digital Photo Art as the creation of an image or digital file using a method or methods that substantially alters the original subject as at was seen in the eye of the photographer at the moment of capture.

Examples of significant changes could include:

o Combining multiple images together

o Moving elements

o Cloning large elements (e.g. animals)

o Applying Artistic Filters

o Multiple Exposures - not done in camera

Final Arbiter:

It is recommended that great weight be given to the classification assigned by the creator (photographer) using the guidelines above. The final arbiter of classification will be the judge or curator of a given exhibition / show / or contest.
